Coffee is an expensive drink. Coffee lovers have their own brands and ways of brewing coffee the personalized style. However buying the beans would require one to engage in a scrutiny as to whether the retail shop sells fresh products or not. Now having to get a sealed container does not always mean that the beans are fresh. Also judging the freshness by the expiry dates mentioned at the back of the pack also serves little to the purpose of guaranteeing the quality of the coffee beans. Rather one can actually judge the freshness by performing a little home based test with the help of a zipper bag.
The process:
- Buying the sealed container you require to scoop out 1/2 spoon of the powdered coffee and place it in clean zipper bag.
- Please take note that the zipper bag that you intend to use is free of moisture or other inappropriate chemicals that might have been stored in it before.
- Empty the spoon in the zipper bag and roll out the powder so that all the air passes out of the opening. In case you have difficulty to properly roll out sir then what you can do is close half the mouth of the zipper bag and then press out air inch by inch.
- Remember when you are sealing the mouth the channel must properly fall into place to as to ensure that no air can pass into the bag. Also do check for leaks in the zipper bag. Even a microscopic leak can hinder the test.
- Now keep the sealed pack in room temperature but out of direct sunlight. Keep it overnight or for a day.
Now you must be wondering what is it exactly that you are looking for? When you take up the zipper bag after the testing time is over you should be looking out for puffiness within the bag. Incase the bag has swollen up then it is because the coffee is giving out the carbon content, meaning the beans are not as fresh as the retailers promised. However if there is no puffed up air inside the zipper bag then you should likely go back to the retailer whoever sold you the coffee when you are out of stocks.
This process is also performed on an industrial level to ensure that the top class quality of the coffee beans. However the zipper bag is something more home based experiment to know the how much fresh is the coffee that you drink everyday. While preservation of the beans is an important part one must also be careful that once a container is opened then it should be finished within two weeks. This is a reason why people are asked to buy coffee in small amounts and finish it as early as possible.
